IGI security lapses: HC asks authorities to explain

2 74

New Delhi: Alleged security lapses at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport came under the scanner of Delhi high court on Wednesday.
The court decided to seek the stand of the central government and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on a PIL claiming that some people have managed to enter the airport on the basis of fake or cancelled tickets and the poorly trained CISF staffers are unable to prevent such a breach owing to huge rush of air travel passengers.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice on the plea filed by advocate Sufian Siddiqui seeking a comprehensive security audit of the airport to plug the loopholes. Arguing for installation of state-of-the-art PNR scanners at the airport, Siddiqui’s PIL said it will help security personnel process passenger entry faster and in a more accurate manner reducing chances of a breach as only authentic e-ticket holders will be allowed to go inside.
On its part the DGCA counsel informed the bench that security aspect of airports falls under the BCAS.
“International e-tickets issued outside India are different as compared to e-tickets issued from India thus making the job of staff deployed at the entry gate extremely difficult to decipher/verify owing to the ever-increasing growth in air travel coupled with perpetual rush at IGI airport, CISF officials deputed at the entry points are already hard-pressed and they struggle to manage the rush resulting in the security becoming vulnerable,” the PIL submitted.
